After Dowry Case, Obscenity Complaint Against 'Godwoman' Radhe Maa

MUMBAI:  The mini-skirt controversy is not the only issue dogging self-styled godwoman Radhe Maa. There is a police case against her as well for inciting a family to demand dowry. Besides, a Mumbai-based lawyer has lodged a complaint with the police, accusing her of being a fake guru who encourages her followers to kiss and hug her.

"I have lodged a complaint against her for cheating people in the name of religion and creating obscenity and vulgarity," said advocate Falguni Brahmbhatt.

In the dowry case, a 32-year-old woman accused Radhe Maa of instigating her in-laws, her followers, to demand dowry.

She alleged that she had to suffer "mental and physical harassment" over the dowry demand, news agency Press Trust of India quoted Mukund Pawar, Senior Inspector, Kandivali Police Station, as saying.

In her complaint, the woman said Radhe Maa had instigated her in-laws and other family members to demand dowry and harass her if the demand is not met, he said.

The police have named seven persons as accused, including the godwoman and the victim's husband. They have been charged with cheating, criminal breach of trust, cruelty and harassment for dowry under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Dowry Prohibition Act, police said.

The faith of her devotees, however, remains unshaken.
"There is difference between a touch, a sensual touch and a sexual touch. Radhe Maa's touch is not sexual or sensual. Radhe Maa's touch is a mother's love for a child and that is pure love", Aarti Razdan who has been a follower of the spiritual guru for the last 12 years told NDTV.

Supreme Court Notice on Blocking Websites Selling Prohibited Drugs

NEW DELHI:  The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the central government on a plea by NGO Bachpan Bachao Andolan seeking a clamp down on websites selling and delivering prohibited drugs which were being used by children on a large scale.

The social justice bench of Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice Uday Umesh Lalit issued notice after senior counsel HS Phoolka appearing for the NGO told the court that a survey has revealed that about two crore children are using these drugs, tobacco and other narcotic products.

Describing the situation as "alarming", Mr Phoolka said that these drugs were being "openly used in the schools."

As he handed over a paper to the bench carrying the names of the drugs sold on websites, the court said that these are old ones and now many new drugs have come and are circulating in the market.

Meanwhile, in the missing children matter, the social justice bench on Friday warned that it would take a stern view and initiate contempt proceedings against the officials if it was provided with "misleading" information.

The court said this as it let-off Navin Yadav, an undersecretary in the women and child development ministry, summoned to the court for allegedly giving figures in an affidavit that were at variance with what the minister had told parliament in response to an question.

The court forgave the official after being satisfied that the error in furnishing figures to the court was "bonafide" and also waived the Rs. 25,000 fine that it had imposed on the ministry in the last hearing of the matter on July 31.

The court on July 31 had taken a strong exception to huge discrepancy in the figures of the number of missing children as told to it and those placed before the parliament and had said that such a situation would not be "tolerated".

"Ideas can change but numbers can't change," the court had said observing that somebody was misleading it.

The court had directed the personal presence of Navin Yadav in the last hearing after Bachpan Bachao Andolan had told the court that the minister had told the Rajya Sabha that 79,721 children had gone missing during 2013-2015 whereas the ministry's affidavit before the court was putting the figures at 25,834.

US Says Not Aware if PM Modi Will Visit White House During September Trip

WASHINGTON:  The US has said it is not aware of any planned visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the White House during his trip to the country to attend 70th annual session of the UN General Assembly in New York next month.

"I'm not aware of any planned visits by Prime Minister Modi to the White House in conjunction with his travel to the US for the United Nations General Assembly," White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said on Friday.

Responding to questions on possibility of PM Modi meeting President Barack Obama, Mr Earnest said the White House was oblivious of any such development.

PM Modi is also expected to travel to San Francisco to address the Indian Diaspora on September 27 and meet corporate leaders in the Silicon Valley, becoming the fourth Indian Premier to visit US' West Coast.

In a five-day visit to the US in September last year, PM Modi had met President Obama and sought investment from prominent CEOs besides exhorting the Indian-American community to take up a greater role in the development of India.

5 Women Killed in Jharkhand on Witchcraft Allegations

RANCHI:  Five women have been killed in a village in Jharkhand, 45 kilometres from capital Ranchi, reportedly on allegations of witchcraft.

The village falls under Ranchi's Mandar block. The police have confirmed the incident and say they have not made any arrest yet and are investigating.

The cops also say that prima facie it seems that villagers were involved in the incident and there was no outside influence.

Killings on the suspicion of witchcraft have a fairly high occurrence in Jharkhand and in the past, many such instances have come to light in the state.

According to National Crime Bureau Records (NCRB), 2097 people have been killed across the country on allegations of witchcraft between 2000 and 2012 and 363 of those cases have been from Jharkhand. The state government figure, meanwhile, say that between 2011 and 2013, more than 400 people were killed and 2854 of such cases registered.

Jharkhand has had an anti-witchcraft law since 2001, but human rights activists say not much has been done on the ground to make the law effective, including creating social awareness about the issue.

A 12-Hour Congress Bandh to Protest Killing of Bengal Student Allegedly by Trinamool Activists

A 12-hour bandh or shutdown called by the Congress is in place in West Bengal's West Midnapore district to protest the killing of a third-year college student allegedly by members of the Trinamool Congress' youth wing.

The bandh is being supported by the BJP and CPIM. "It's a very unfortunate incident. A student lost its life because he refuse to felicitate a TMC minister and he was beaten to death by TMC youth workers. This goes to show that jihadi mentality under Mamata Banerjee has percolated down to the college and university politics, particularly championed by the TMC youth wing leaders," said BJP leader Sidharth Nath Singh.

The Congress Chhatra Parishad has also called for a one-hour statewide 'chakka jam' or road blockade protest from 11 am today along with strike across colleges.

Trinamool Chatra Parishad activists purportedly ganged up on Krishnapada Jana, a Congress supporter, on Friday and attacked him with sticks and iron rods as he was leaving the college at Sabang.

Police said Jana died on the way to the hospital.

The Trinamool Chatra Parishad has denied any involvement in the incident. Both the student wings of the Congress and the Trinamool Congress have claimed that Jana was their member.

"The incident is unfortunate but Trinamool Congress Chatra Parishad is not involved. It was some kind of student clash. The principal was locked up. The student died from injuries after he was hit with a bat. The police is investigating. I have said strong action must be taken," Trinamool chief West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said.

The incident happened around 2:30 pm on Friday at the Sabang Sajanikanta Mahavidyalay after some Congress students reportedly refused to attend a felicitation of West Bengal minister Soumen Mahapatra.

Students supporting the Trinamool Congress and the Congress party had earlier clashed over the issue, reports said.

Mr Mahapatra, the Water Resources Investigation and Development Minister, however has denied that he was even in the area.

TMCP district working president Prodyut Ghosh told the Press Trust of India that the clash was the result of an "internal feud within Chhatra Parishad" and four members of the student union were hospitalised after it.
